Optional Elements

COMMONLY USED OPTIONS

The array of possibilities for your ceremony is nearly endless.  Consider who should be included, the desired length, and the general spirit of the wedding.  Here are a number of frequently included components:

•  Music – live or recorded

•  Readings by friends and family

•  Presentation of bride (to the groom) or the couple (to each other, from their parents)

•  Acknowledgment of parents by the couple

•  Acknowledgement of those who are here in spirit

•  A synopsis of the couple’s story – how you met, your shared values and hopes for the future

•  Blessing or affirmation of support from parents or assembled community

•  Inclusion of the couple’s children in the ceremony.

SYMBOLIC AND CULTURAL TRADITIONS
Many couples choose a special symbolic action to mark their marriage.  Some are culturally based, giving you an opportunity to incorporate your family origins.  Even if they aren’t traditional, we can make them a meaningful part of your union.  Some suggestions include:

•  Candle lighting

•  Sand-blending (using sand, salt, colored sand/crystals)

•  Blending and sharing wine in unity.  May also include the couple’s family members.

•  Handfasting (Celtic origins)

•  Jumping the broom (African/U.S. Southern origins).  Alternatives include stepping over a sword, rope, flowers, etc.

•  Breaking wineglass underfoot (Jewish origins).  One or both partners may participate.

•  Intertwining ropes

The list goes on!  I look forward to discovering traditions – or creating new ones – that have meaning for you.
